Our community physicians, alumni and friends are vital to the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health’s success in providing comprehensive care, innovative instruction and progressive research across the commonwealth. Whether hosting medical students in rotations, offering training opportunities for residents or giving to the department, your support is valuable in sustaining the quality of service and strength of knowledge our patients and students have come to expect.

We invite you to learn how you can support the department.

The VCU Department of Family Medicine is pleased to provide an exciting new resource - a Research Guide for Preceptors accessible through the VCU libraries website

Detailed information about the Research Guide is provided below by John Cyrus, the VCU Librarian responsible for the creation and maintenance of the Research Guide. John is available to assist preceptors in accessing VCU library resources. If you have any questions about the Research Guide, VCU library resources, or if you have difficulty opening the link, please contact John at cyrusjw@vcu.edu or 804-828-1881.

If you need assistance obtaining your "VCU eID", please contact Sharon Flores at sharon.flores@vcuhealth.org or 804-628-4380. A VCU eID is needed in order to create a password that will allow you to make the most of your library privileges.

We hope that you will find this resource helpful in your professional development.

Dear Preceptor,

As a preceptor affiliated with the VCU Department of Family Medicine, you are allowed privileges to the VCU Libraries Resources. The library has created a Research Guide organizing many of these resources in one accessible source.

To navigate this page, there are yellow tabs at the top of the guide (underneath the research guide title). Each of these tabs links to a page of important resources for your professional practice and preceptorship.

  • The “Home” page consists of links to the most popular resources, the Ask-A-Librarian form and information about personalized services offered at the library.
  • The “Using the Library” page contains a brief explanation and videos on how to use the VCU Libraries.
  • The “Preceptor Information” page links to free articles about preceptorship, mentoring and the practice of Family Medicine.
  • The “Articles and Databases” page includes key journals in Family Medicine along with databases to search for articles and point-of-care materials.
  • The “Books” page locates specific books and e-books on preceptorship as well as links to our extensive e-books collections.
  • The final resource tab is “Websites” which directs you to free resources available from the government and Family Medicine organizations.

If you find an important Family Medicine resource is missing from this page or have any other comments or questions regarding the VCU Libraries, please use the “Feedback” tabs to let us know.
