Department of Family Medicine & Population Health

Welcome! At VCU, we are passionate about family medicine.

Our residents receive superb training at diverse and dynamic programs throughout Virginia, where our faculty physicians emphasize teamwork as well as the development of the individual. The VCU Family Medicine Graduate Program is a system of four community-based residencies located in urban, suburban and rural settings, co-sponsored by some of the best health care systems in Virginia.

We are also proud to say that we have achieved a milestone reached by very few other departments — more than 1,000 family physicians have graduated from our residency programs. We encourage you to learn more about how our resident graduates are prepared for a fulfilling and successful professional career.

While we are proud of our residency programs, the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health has a lot more to offer. Explore our website to learn about our undergraduate programs, which include an innovative and highly successful International/Inner City/Rural Preceptorship, a nationally recognized Family Medicine Interest Group, a clerkship that gets rave reviews from students and new opportunities for international service learning.

Our research team has grown rapidly and includes collaborators from many other departments and institutions. Our team of researchers includes two members of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine), the chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, and a contributing editor to JAMA. Please visit the research area of our website to learn more about past, present and future research initiatives in the department.

We look forward to helping you achieve your goals.

Best wishes,
